My name is Emily and I work in Finance. From growing up in Jamaica, I’ve always been in tune with nature as well as how I interact with the world. I enjoy gardening, reading, music, and learning ways to improve myself. As a child until my teenage years, my mother and grandmother took care of my hair. It was very long and very healthy. I hardly saw my hair curly though as it was always in a protective style.
When I took over doing my hair, I stuck to the more natural route inspired by the organic lifestyle of Jamaica but I didn’t know how to braid or anything like that. I started wearing my hair out and struggled to find products that worked. My hair has always been my favorite way to express myself. It hit me hard when I was struggling to find a way to style it. The way I look plays a big part in how I see myself and has an impact on my confidence. Eventually I gave up and began having fun. I dyed my hair multiple times, bleached it, stripped it, and cut it into all different styles. Eventually I missed my long hair and was tired of feeling dry, straw-like hair. Thankfully, I found The Innate Life. I miss having long hair as that’s how I feel the most beautiful.
Passions of mine include health, wellness, fitness, playing with my puppy, and being around my family. I’m all about living in the moment and being happy. I’ve learnt to admire my inner beauty and that hair does not define me.
Hair health is a passion of mine. I want to nurse it back to health and watch its transformation. As a child, I looked up to princesses like Jasmine and Rapunzel. They were strong women who did their best to be happy and live life while looking good doing so. I always wanted to grow my hair that long. Right now, growing my hair and being happy are my biggest goals. I read all the ingredients in products before I buy them and even use an app called Yuka to rate the wellness factor of them. My family often quarrels about me taking forever while looking through hair aisles even when I don’t need anything. It’s like I’m a kid at a candy store.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE TEXTURE OF YOUR HAIR?
My hair has many textures currently. My current hair texture is fine 3c hair with a hint of dryness and frizz. A majority is healthy since I did the big chop and have been doing my best to use natural products and wear my hair in protective styles. I still have some dyed ends that are very dry and easily frizzy. I have 3b-3c fine curly hair. That being said, it was always thick volume-wise and prone to shrinkage.
HOW DID YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR HAIR BEFORE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE INNATE LIFE PRODUCTS?
I used to make my own hair products but eventually turned to drug store products because it was faster and cheaper. My go-to is a horsetail and nettle leaf tea spray, any leave-in conditioner cream I could find, and a hair gel. I would use so much gel that my hair would be crunchy and flat, but it gave me the length I was looking for. Shrinkage is not my friend. I did deep conditioners whenever I wanted, never consistently.
WHAT MADE YOU SEEK OUT THE INNATE LIFE PRODUCTS? HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE COMPANY?
I wanted to grow my hair out and have it be healthier. I decided to start making my own hair products again because I was seeing progress but time isn’t something I have in abundance. I was doing a lot of research and I found The Innate Life.
WHAT SETS THE INNATE LIFE APART FROM OTHER COMPANIES IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
I like The Innate Life because they use only the most organic and healthy ingredients that are scientifically proven to improve hair health and speed up growth. The Innate Life is a small company with a mission to transform the lives of their clients. They aren’t like major corporations that sometimes lose focus on what’s important and focus on supplying as many products as possible regardless of the quality.
WHAT IS YOUR HAIRCARE ROUTINE NOW?
I am currently using the Herbal Hair Mask
as well as the Leave-in Conditioner
. My current routine is to pre-poo, shampoo, condition, deep condition, rinse, Leave-in Conditioner
, curl cream and gel. I’ve gone back to using my tea rinses such as nettle, horsetail, and nettle after washing. Then I use my Innate Life Leave-in Conditioner spray
. After, I go in with a cream and do a protective style, or I use a gel after and wear my hair out curly. I pre-poo with oil every other wash day before I shampoo, and use my deep-conditioners like The Innate Life Herbal Hair Mask
, or another deep conditioner on wash days where I don’t pre-poo.
HOW DID YOU SEE YOUR HAIR CHANGE AFTER USING THE INNATE LIFE PRODUCTS?
I’ve noticed that my hair has become a lot softer and seems to hold moisture better. I no longer feel as though running my hands through it can be compared to shredded straws. It’s definitely longer and healthier. I can finally pull all my hair back into a ponytail. I believe it is a lot stronger as I’ve seen a decrease in hair fall when brushing. I comb through my hair once a week and usually have a clump at the end the size of my palm. It’s shrunk in size by twice the size. My hair is also less frizzy.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOU TO SEE RESULTS?
I did a big chop at the end of October 2022 and my hair did not flow down at all. It was in a small afro that stopped at the end of my ears. It’s now June 2023 and my hair is at my shoulders. It took three months before I started seeing progress.
My hair was in an afro in October and could not fit into a ponytail or high puff. Towards the end of January, I was finally able to do a high puff and saw some length. I was still struggling with dryness and frizz but it felt stronger and healthier. By February, it started to flow down and barely touched the tip of my shoulders. Here is where I saw an improvement in curl pattern and frizz. My hair also had some shine to it. By March, my hair was touching my shoulders fully and I was wearing it out curly more confidently. Around this time, I was also getting a lot of compliments on my hair. We are now in June and my hair is creeping a little past shoulder length (all lengths mentioned have been in its curly state). It is a lot thicker though and the volume is back. It’s hard to measure curly hair growth due to shrinkage.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT AND WHY?
I really love the Problematic Scalp Treatment
the most. That was the first product I ever bought and it’s why I became a loyal customer. I find that it moisturizes my scalp well and helps with the blood circulation. It’s thick so you only need a small amount. In that sense, it’s taught me not to have such a heavy hand with products. Sometimes less is more.
WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THESE PRODUCTS TO?
Anyone struggling to grow healthy hair or suffering from damage will benefit greatly from using The Innate Life. Hair health is extremely important and those who care will love this brand.
HOW DOES THE INNATE LIFE FIT INTO A LIFESTYLE COMMITTED TO HEALTH + WELLNESS?
The Innate Life really considers the quality of their ingredients being used and are dedicated to making a difference.
